What does a Unhoused Training Specialization mean?

TTC College’s Unhoused Training program is designed for certified Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialists who would like to work with consumers who have a history or currently unhoused. Peer students will work to understand how to navigate systems that impact unhoused community members. 


What You’ll Learn

Our Unhoused Training Specialization is an accelerated 2-week long (40 hours total) program which can be taken in-person, online, or through a hybrid version. Students choosing this path will learn the following:

This course explores how lived experience can be used to build rapport and connect unhoused consumers with essential resources, including housing, employment, and food assistance. Students will learn evidence-based strategies to empower consumers, promote recovery, and support long-term stability.

This course examines the prevalence and impact of trauma among individuals experiencing homelessness through a trauma-informed lens. Students will explore different types of homelessness, common barriers to accessing services, the effects of justice-system involvement, and strategies for connecting consumers to free and low-cost community resources.

This course focuses on identifying and responding to safety concerns, risks, and crisis situations commonly experienced by unhoused consumers. Students will learn how to leverage community-based resources and support services to promote stability, recovery, and successful community reintegration.

This course examines the impact of vicarious trauma, community violence, burnout, and compassion fatigue on peer support practice. Students will learn how to apply the Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Code of Ethics while understanding confidentiality, professional boundaries, and ethical considerations when supporting unhoused consumers.


Certification Eligibility 

Upon successful completion, graduates meet the educational requirements to submit a verification application to add their specialization:

Admissions Requirements

To enroll in the program, applicants must:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Hold a high school diploma or GED
  • Agree and sign the California Department of Health Care Services Code of Ethics for Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialists in California
