Our next deep dive explores the impact of the SUD apprenticeship within a partner organization. In our previous deep dive, we looked at how Tarzana Treatment Centers College (TTCC) and the San Diego Workforce Partnership (SDWP) built a solid foundation. The goal of this foundation is to foster a strong behavioral health pipeline.
However, the true measure of a program’s success is in real-world outcomes. Consequently, today we go behind the scenes at the McAlister Institute, a nonprofit behavioral health leader serving San Diego County since 1977.
By incorporating the TTCC curriculum into their internal Certified Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor Apprenticeship Program, McAlister isn’t just filling vacancies; they are raising the standard of care.

Addressing the Crisis with the SUD Apprenticeship
The behavioral health industry is currently facing a well-documented workforce crisis. For the McAlister Institute, partnering with TTCC was a strategic move to ensure the community continues to receive services based on “compassion, dignity, and evidence-based care.” This initiative stemmed from a clear, local need for a sustainable talent pipeline.
As McAlister explains in the partner spotlight:
“McAlister Institute launched a Certified Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor Apprenticeship Program as a direct and intentional response to the well-documented behavioral health workforce crisis facing San Diego County. San Diego was experiencing a growing gap between the increasing demand for behavioral health services and the number of qualified professionals available to provide that care. This prompted McAlister Institute to seek out innovative, sustainable solutions to build and diversify its own workforce while creating accessible pathways for individuals to enter and advance within the field.”
The SUD Apprenticeship and a Culture of Wraparound Support
What makes the TTCC partnership unique is its double-layered support system. Indeed, apprentices are not left to handle demanding coursework alone; they get assistance from both their employer and the college’s specialized faculty. Therefore, McAlister sees this collaborative setup as essential for keeping high employee morale while managing the challenges of a high-stakes work environment.
- A Student-Centered Approach: TTCC’s faculty and student services teams work closely with apprentices to guide them through the accelerated curriculum and ensure a smooth transition from the classroom to the clinic.
- Reduced Stress and Better Balance: This joint support from both McAlister and TTCC helps employees “balance rigorous coursework with their professional responsibilities,” which effectively prevents burnout.
- Fostered Confidence: The structure has built “fostered confidence” in staff, enabling them to translate classroom theory into real-world patient interactions with support from a strong professional network.
The Impact: Continued Growth Through the SUD Apprenticeship
In addition, the feedback from the front lines has been extremely positive. Most importantly, staff members enrolled in the program through Tarzana have reported “high levels of satisfaction with both the coursework and the overall learning experience.” Additionally, they mention feeling supported at each stage of the process.
Hence, McAlister evaluates the program’s success not only through numbers but also through the qualitative development of the staff. Indeed, such a benefit is central to the TTCC program. As stated on the TTC College website, “Whether you’re just starting out or advancing your professional journey, TTC College offers a supportive, mission-driven environment where education becomes a catalyst for meaningful impact.”
McAlister emphasizes the tangible benefits of the collaborative environment:
“Staff who enrolled in the program through Tarzana have expressed high levels of satisfaction with both the coursework and the overall learning experience, noting that they felt supported at every stage of the process. Employees benefited from wraparound support not only from McAlister Institute as their employer, but also from Tarzana’s faculty, instructors, and student services team, who worked closely with apprentices to guide them through the accelerated curriculum. This collaborative support structure fostered confidence, reduced stress, and helped employees balance rigorous coursework with their professional responsibilities.”
Furthermore, by investing in this educational pathway, the McAlister Institute has established itself as an “employer of choice” in San Diego. The partnership has triggered a ripple effect: as staff become more skilled, the organization’s culture of professional growth grows stronger.
Ultimately, McAlister notes that “working with Tarzana has been invaluable, as their responsive faculty, dedicated instructors, and student-centered approach have created a strong, trust-based partnership that delivers comprehensive support for apprentices and directly contributes to the program’s success, employee satisfaction, and ongoing growth.”
